Another Day at Trent Port Marina - Lock 1 and a Dandy Small Brewery!

This blog will chronicle our (Pat and Patty Anderson's)
cruising adventures on the Great Loop!

DAY 91 - June 30, 2017

Through the fog in my brain while still drowsing this morning, I was vaguely aware of the wind howling and the rain pounding down! Then I was rudely awakened by a big thud when a gust of wind took the kayak off the bow, where it had been balanced between the brow and the bow rail but not tied down. Fortunately, it landed on the dock rather than in the water! So I pulled on some clothes and went out to put it back, but this time, I made sure it was securely tied! Not my preferred way to wake up!

Nan and Ron on Romso
Our C-Dory friends Bill and El Fiero had sent us an email about their friends from Boulder, CO, Nan and Ron Schwiesow on Romso (the "o" has a diagonal slash through it, it is a Danish character not on my keyboard!) Romso is a sailboat without a mast. Bill and El had included Nan and Ron's itinerary, which looked like they would be perpetually a day or two behind us. But since we extended our stay here, they caught up with us. Amazingly, the marina assigned them the slip right next to ours! We have enjoyed chatting and comparing notes with them!

In the afternoon, it cleared up and looked like it was going to stay partly sunny, so I took one of the folding bikes down to pedal to Lock 1 to get our free locking decal and buy our mooring permit.  It was about two and a half miles each way.  Lock 1 is kind of a hybrid lock, where the downstream end has standard hydraulically operated doors, but the upstream end is manually operated!  I got my locking decal and mooring permit, and then watched this lock in operation for awhile, and got this short video of the young ladies who operate the Lock 1 door!

Young ladies manually operating lock door!

On the ride back, I noticed a sign for a brewery, so naturally I diverted from the main road, since it was now hot, and I was thirsty! Plus, I seldom have passed by any small brewery on our Loop! It was about two blocks back to a small brewery named "Wild Card Brewery" - the owners are two brothers whose last name is Card, their logo is a poker hand with Aces and a Wild Card, and their slogan is "What's in Your Hand?" I had their West Coast style IPA, and it was very good!

It looks to us like the barge across the way probably is loaded up with the fireworks for tomorrow's Canada Day celebration. According to the flyer, there are festivities all day in Centennial Park across the river from us. I think we will need to get the other bike down and pedal over tomorrow!
