Preparing to Leave Pensacola

This blog will chronicle our (Pat and Patty Anderson's)
cruising adventures on the Great Loop!

DAY 199 - October 16,. 2017

"They say that all good things must end someday." ~ Chad and Jeremy, A Summer Song.

We have really enjoyed our time in Pensacola with Bob and Marie Austin, but like the song says, all good things must end! Tomorrow we will cast off our lines for the final part of our Loop back to River Forest Yacht Basin in La Belle on the Caloosahatchee River where we will cross our wake.   We will stop to visit our friend Marc Grove in Apalachicola, cross the Big Bend, and do some sightseeing on the west coast of Florida.

After breakfast, Marie took Patty shopping for some re-provisioning.  While she was gone, I did some exterior cleaning and washed the Sea Eagle. The mud of the rivers seemed to just have worked its way into every crack and crevice! With a 3M scrub pad, I think I did a fairly good job, but the real cleaning will have to wait until we get back to Birch Bay!

We said goodbyes to our Travasack, which is a sleeping bag that conforms to the shape of the vee-berth. We have had it for twelve years, and in Patty's estimation, it was just time for it to go. Bob will try to get it washed in a commercial laundry, and if it cleans up OK, it will go to the homeless, and if not, well, it will go to the big sleeping bag final resting place in the sky! We'll be using new comforters and fleece blankets in the vee-berth. In fact, for most of our Loop, we have been sleeping on top of the Travasack with the fleece blankets anyway.

We then pulled all the cushions out of the vee-berth, and I got down to something we have not done frequently enough on this trip - a good dilute bleach wipe-down of all the surfaces. I have periodically attacked cleaning the vee-berth with Clorox Wipes, but this time, I used a brush and rags, and after the fumes dissipate, it will once again be suitable for human habitation!

After dinner, we had a pleasant evening of conversation, Bob fired up the Navionics webapp and Active Captain, and showed us where we might want to stay between here and Apalachicola. He also gave us a chartbook for the area and a Florida cruising guide that will be very useful.  We have a bit to do to put things back together on Daydream tomorrow morning, and we should be on our way by noon!

    1. Baxter was in the house, but Lucy was on the passenger seat in the cabin. No ill effects so far as we can tell, for either her or me!

  2. I know Bob and Marie are wonderful hosts. I'm curious about Baxter and the cat while you are there. Were they off the boat during your visit?

    1. See the response to Charlie! Baxter was off the boat, but Lucy was on the boat! They would have been happy to have Lucy, but she is too crazy! She would have hidden under a bed and never be seen again!

  3. Have you heard anything from Rico? Does he do any online updates anywhere?

  4. Dear Friends, Your trip has been like a fine big meal, with some part you just love, like the Appys, and then some times there are some of the things you don't like so much, like the brussel sprouts or okra, (you know, some of those veggie things" and then comes dessert and the visit with Dr Bob and Marie would be the dessert, (or for some, the fine wine), before the end of the meal, to enjoy and savor. So glad this trip has been so good to you. Yes, three was the rub rail,,,, but there was also a hurricane, and there could have been so much more. So glad the more was on the good side for you. Stay safe and enjoy the afterglow. Harvey/SleepyC
