Fisherman's Bay, Hog Island

This blog will chronicle our (Pat and Patty Anderson's)
cruising adventures on the Great Loop!

DAY 124 - August 2, 2017

No track for today, we forgot to turn track recording on!

During the night, we had a thunderstorm roll through Mackinac Island. We had left all the cockpit canvas and cabin windows open because it had been a beautiful warm day, so we scrambled in the middle of the night to get everything closed up!

We have a service appointment for the outboard and to get a new prop at Irish Boat Shop in Harbor Springs on Little Traverse Bay, but that was a bit too far for us to run in one day, so we picked Hog Island, about 36 miles from Mackinaw Island. The waves were 1-2 feet, and it was a little bit lumpy for us but not terrible. This is what we are getting to expect on Lake Michigan - we will be shocked if we ever see it glassy smooth!

One of the Active Captain reviews said Hog Island had a rocky bottom and a rocky beach. I will have to correct that! The bottom was sandy with quite a few large rocks strewn around, but it was not "rocky" in the sense that the bottom was all or mostly rock. The Rocna set easily! The nice surprise, though, was that the beach was not rocky either. It was a nice sandy beach, or more like a wide sand bar in front of a narrow wetland with a nice grassy upland beyond the wetland. Baxter approved!

Fisherman's Bay at Hog Island has great wind protection for every direction except west winds. So take a wild guess at which way the wind was blowing from all evening? It was a pretty wild evening, we hope it calms down tonight!

Other than that, not much to report on Hog Island. We arrived about 2:30 p.m., Baxter went to shore, we had supper, we read our Kindles, and went to bed!
